Hi,

Can anyone recommend an approved installer in the North West that could
convert my Merc Vito Diesel?

Has anyone here had a Diesel converted to LPG?

All the best,

Jach

You cant convert a diesel, you can only have LPG as an additional fuel.

You can, there is a Taxi in Accrington that was converted some years ago.
The bloke who did it was called Len and was in a unit at Accy Gas(now
gone). He fitted a spark injection system and some other stuff.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

So it's no longer a diesel engine.
It would be far easier just to replace the engine with a petrol engine, then
convert that, than to try to convert a diesel engine into a spark ignition
engine.

by your definition mines no longer a petrol engine either then. so its an
'engine' and therefore equally valid

it would btw still run on diesel if he wanted.

Nope. They remove the injectors and decompress the engine as part of
conversion to LPG or CNG. It's the same conversion as is done for city
buses running on LPG or CNG in various cities around the world. The only
way to go back to diesel is to fully de-convert it.

Hi Simon,

When you say additional fuel, I assume that LPG & Diesel are mixed?

What percentage of LPG can be mixed with Diesel?

Cheers,

The LPG is ussually introduced into the inlet manifold, mixed with the air.

That dodgy site? Yep, that's "diesel enhancement", where they simply
dump LPG into the intake and about half of it goes straight through the
valve overlap and straight out the exhaust. Exhaust hydrocarbons are
through the roof and it can't comply with any emission standards except
diesel smoke, which improves.

Then again, the "pusher" that that site is about is an illegal vehicle
in all UN-ECE regulation countries and *probably* in the USA. I never
did get an answer from the US government department that I emailed
about it... Might ask on SAE or ASME forums...

The only way that actually works properly and complies with emission
standards is timed sequential injection into the intake runners like a
petrol injection system. The injection has to start late enough that
it doesn't make it out of the cylinder into the exhaust during overlap.

IIRC, "Diesel Gas DG" has a patent on such a system and is selling it
into London taxis.

My general recollection is that they turn off the LPG at idle but that
at full load, the fuel usage is 51% LPG, 49% diesel.
